The Whistling Bench

Exhibited:

'The Future of Art and Innovation' exhibit at the MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art), Sydney 19th March, 2015
The Whistling bench was designed with the concept of seating that 'started a conversation’. This idea was in response to observations of the limited interaction between people in public spaces. It was noted people isolated themselves with earphones and heads buried in technology, all to avoid interacting with other people.

The idea of prompting strangers to strike up conversation was realised through six compression boxes that make up the bench, each chamber creates a unique wind based tone when compressed. Sound became the conversation catalyst when users interacted with the bench. The idea being people may purposely interact with the bench or unknowingly sit down, it prompts a reaction. The bench provides a platform for the public to engage and muse over other peoples’ reactions. Moments of human connection, even if brief can be powerful both to the individual and community.
